PINK Stories: Kathy
Imagine the serenity of early morning practices on the water. The rhythmic sound of paddles slicing through the lake, guided by the steady beat of the drum. The fresh air filing our lungs as the boat glides seamlessly, powered by 22 determined breast cancer survivors.
Receiving the news ‘you have breast cancer’ can be devastating, scary, and life-altering. I remember the flood of emotions and the overwhelming realization of how precious time truly is. Nine years ago, I faced this daunting reality.
My path to recovery and wellness has been illuminated by a survivor activity called dragon boating through Dallas United Crew-PINK. This incredible group, made up entirely of breast cancer survivors, has given me a new lease on life. Through exercise, camaraderie, fellowship, and reflection, I have transformed from a cancer patient to a paddler who happens to have had cancer.
In 2026, our team will have the honor of participating in an International Breast Cancer dragon boat competition in France, joining over 4600 other survivors from around the globe. This event represents not just a competition, but a celebration of life, resilience, and the unbreakable spirit of breast cancer survivors.
Together, we can continue to paddle forward, turning survivors into thrivers.
